Are you looking for some fun ideas to use for field day this summer? If so, this 10 field day ideas blog post is perfect to help you with your planning. These ideas are a little different to your usual egg and spoon and sack races. So if you’re looking to mix up field day a little this year – this is the place for you!
1. Chalk Self Portraits
Have students lie on the floor and draw chalk around themselves, then decorate their chalk body into a self-portrait to look like themselves! You can even set it up as a competition and have parents/attendees vote on who has the best self-portrait.
2. Scavenger Hunt
My kids LOVE a scavenger hunt. You can make this as big or small as you want. It can be one station in a section of the field or it can be all-day scavenger hunt where they have to find items on their page through all of the stations and hand it in at the end.
3. Water Balloon Toss
Always a fun one – but be warned, you can get wet so keep your distance! Set out targets for students to throw water balloons at. We like to use the sticky spots to place on the floor and they have to throw the water balloons at them. For each target they hit, they get 1 point.
4. Wet Sponge Tag
This one is always the most popular one, and just makes everyone fall about giggling! Have sponges in water buckets so that they soak up the water. Make one student ‘it’ and they have to use a water sponge to throw at others to tag them.
5. Dress Up Race
Have students set out in a row for the race. In front of each student is a selection of clothes spread out over a few feet. Students have to stop at each item of clothing, get dressed and then proceed to the next piece of clothing before crossing the finish line.
6. Ice Cream Relay
Not literal ice cream so don’t worry! Give students a large empty ice cream cone (made out of paper/card) and put either large pom-poms in there or soft balls. The first student has an empty cone. They run to the next student who takes the cone and puts their soft ball into it. They run to the next student who has another soft ball which they put on top of the cone and ball and so on to the next. Use velcro to help keep the scoops stable.
7. Horse Riding Race
Decorate some pool noodles as horses and provide one to each student. Students have to ‘ride their horse’ in the race to the finish line.
8. The Floor is Lava!
Always bunches of fun! Set up an obstacle course with everything off the floor. Throw red balloons and balls all around the floor to act as a reminder for lava. Student’s have to complete the obstacle course without touching the floor!
9. Duck, Duck, Splash
This is a similar concept to duck, duck, goose. Except instead of goose – you’re going to be using a cup of water! The student goes around the circle tapping duck, duck, duck, duck.. But when you say splash, they have to pour the cup of water over the person and then run around the circle without getting caught by the person before taking their spot! You can also swap to water balloons etc.
10. Fishing
This one is great for mixing up however you want and can be great for working on extra skills. Have up an inflatable pool, print out and laminate fishes and have students go fishing for them – attach magnets to the fish and then a magnet to the fishing rod. Students can have challenges to collect a certain amount of fishes or it can be a race against two teams with 2 different color fishes – the first to collect their color fish wins.
