This is a lovely book to discuss all the other things that a groundhog can do, and not just what they do on Groundhog Day! It’s a great way to expand your students learning about groundhogs.
Grumpy Groundhog
This is something I think we can all relate to! The poor groundhog is warm and cosy in his bed. He doesn’t want to go to work! Does that sound familiar? We love this story and it’s a great way to continue to expand your students learning with so many different activities to use in class afterwards.
Groundhog’s Dilemma
My students loved this book, especially when the groundhog has everyone believing that he can control the weather! Don’t worry – he comes clean at the end!
Groundhog Day
This is a lovely book that’s full of information about Groundhog Day. My students love having a visual approach to learning and this book was perfect for me to provide them with that opportunity.
Punxsutawney Phil
I have to admit, this book scared me. How do I pronounce that first word!? But, it was a great book. Me and my students, and other staff members all sat together saying how we would pronounce the word, which made for lots of fun before the story even started! This is a lovely story about Phyllis who is excited for Spring. But, she has to get her uncle out of bed first to make the official Groundhog Day prediction!
Substitute Groundhog
We LOVE this book and it provided us with so many learning opportunities after we had read it. Follow the groundhog as he interviews other animals to take over his job on Groundhog Day!
Groundhog’s Day Off
Groundhog is fed up of doing the same thing each year for Groundhog Day. So, he’s taking it off this year! But, everyone else who gets interviewed isn’t up to the job!
Brownie Groundhog and February Fox
This is a lovely story about a groundhog and a fox. The fox starts off by wanting to eat the poor groundhog for lunch! But soon, they become friends.
Groundhog’s Runaway Shadow
This is a lovely story for students to understand about the Groundhog’s shadow – and if it doesn’t appear on the day, where might it be?
It’s Groundhog Day!
Roland the Raccoon is worried that his business will suffer if there is an early Spring – so he tries to stop the Groundhog looking for his shadow.
Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather
This is one of our favorite Groundhog Day books to read together. Geoffrey has become a celebrity, but it’s not all glitz and glamour. He is surrounded by cameras and television lights! He’s worried about not being able to see his shadow on Groundhog Day.
Groundhog Day for Phil
This is one of our newer books, and it’s one that we treasure. It’s a lovely read and helped my students learn more about groundhogs and Groundhog Day.
Ten Grouchy Groundhogs
This book is HILARIOUS! We LOVE it! It’s also a great way for us to work on our counting skills too. This is probably the first book that we pull out because my students are obsessed with it.
Groundhog Day Facts and Fun
This was a great read for my older students. They loved finding out more about Groundhog Day and how it started.
Double Trouble Groundhog Day
This is another popular book with my students. The groundhog wants to pass over his job to his grandchildren – but which one? Both of the twins want to do his job!
