I love February in my classroom. The whole theme of Valentine’s Day just fills my classroom with love, happiness and kindness. It’s one of the most important topics in my classroom. As you know by now, I LOVE to theme my books for different seasons, celebrations and topics in my classroom. So, today I’m sharing with you my top 15 Valentine’s Day books. Me and my students love these books – and I have a feeling you will love them all too!
Pete the Cat Valentine’s Day is Cool
Ok, who doesn’t love Pete the Cat? I knew as soon as I saw this book that it was going to be awesome! It starts off with Pete thinking Valentine’s Day isn’t cool, but he soon changes his mind!
Happy Valentine’s Day Mouse!
This book is just adorable and is perfect for my little students. The little mouse is making Valentines for all of his friends using what he loves the most about them.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose
Of course, no book list is complete without an ‘Old Lady Who Swallowed..’ book! This book was another big hit with my students, they love the rhyming and craziness of these books. This time she’s swallowing items to make a special gift.
The Day it Rained Hearts
We love this book, but it did open a can of worms for one of my students. For weeks he was desperate to see actual hearts raining outside. So, if you have any students who are very literal, just keep that in mind. Otherwise, the book was a huge hit. My students loved the story of Cornelia catching the hearts and making them into valentines. When we finished the story, we all made valentines out of hearts too!
The Biggest Valentine Ever
This book is all about two students making a valentine for their teacher together, but it doesn’t quite go as planned.. however it’s a great read to teach students about working together.
Ollie’s Valentine
We love board books and this was another great addition to our collection. Ollie goes searching for his valentine through this beautiful book, with a surprise!
Peppa’s Valentine’s Day
I have some students who LOVE Peppa Pig, so when I saw this book I knew I had to get it for them. And it’s one of my best buys. My students absolutely love this story. Peppa gets a Valentine’s card from Zoe Zebra. Peppa then goes on to learn more about Valentine’s Day.
The Yuckiest, Stinkiest, Best Valentine Ever
My older students enjoyed this book and found it so funny! The book is eye catching with beautiful illustrations and is a real hit with my students.
Snowy Valentine
I know they say you should never judge a book by it’s cover, but when I first saw this book I had to have it. I didn’t even flick through it like I usually would. The cover was just so adorable, I had to have it. And, it was one of the best impulse buys I’ve ever done. My students love following Jasper search for a gift for his loved one, through the snow.
Love, Triangle
This book is such a great way to add some shape recognition and learning into our Valentine’s story time. The story is about a circle and square who are best friends. But, then comes along triangle….
Valensteins
Fran K. Stein is making something and everyone wants to know what it is. But it’s nothing scary – it’s a Valentine! Fran is in love! My students love stories like this and this is one of our firm favourites.
This is NOT a Valentine
This book was good for my older, higher functioning students. It’s all about caring for others and celebrating relationships. Instead of talking about buying gifts to give to others as valentines, the boy shares other things – like special places.
Love Monster
We LOVE the Love Monster! He is trying very hard to fit in at Cutesville, but it’s quite hard for him! He goes off to find someone who loves him for him.
The Night Before Valentine’s Day
This book is adorable to read in the run up to Valentine’s Day. It’s not too long and is a great way for your students to understand more about Valentine’s Day.
Clifford’s First Valentine Day
We have a soft spot for Clifford in our class, and this book didn’t disappoint.
My students loved reading about Clifford’s tour of the Post Office when he is supposed to be mailing a valentine!
