I love hosting a field day, especially at the end of the year. So today I’m sharing 20 field day activities that me and my students love!
1. Relay Races
Relay races are always one of our favorite activities to include. With them being a lower physical requirement too, it means that we can be more inclusive of all our students, regardless of fitness levels.
2. Tug of War
This one is always very popular! I usually grab this tug of war kit from Amazon (aff. link). It’s sturdy and holds up well year and year. My students love this station and it’s one that they often like to repeat. Staff have also been known to enjoy this one!
3. Obstacle Courses
One of my favorite things to do is select a member of staff to just go crazy and have fun setting up an obstacle course! We like to add things that make it a little bit different to your average obstacle course just to keep students engaged and as more of a novelty.
These can be things like; ninja steps, tunnels, baby pool bobbing etc.
4. Hula Hoop Contests
I’m going to be honest here and announce that I am not ever going to win any hula hoop contest. Because it’s just one of those skills I have never been able to master. No matter how many times I’ve Googled it to find out how to do it! But, hula hoop contests are always a fun one. Whether you have it for the student who can hula hoop the longest.. Or hopping into hula hoops.. It could even be who can roll their hoop the fastest. There’s lots of ways to make a hula hoop station fun.
5. Bean Bag Toss
A super nice and simple station. They’re quick to set up between groups accessing them.. And even though it’s a simple station, it’s always one that students really enjoy. It’s a station where the member of staff running it can mix up difficulty levels really quickly for different students.
6. Water Balloon Toss
I can’t tell you, how many of these water balloons we own. (Aff. link) I stock up on them every time that they go on sale. They’re self sealing and they are so quick and easy to set up. Which is exactly what you want for a station like this.. Because who wants to be sitting and filling up individual water balloons to tie? Especially when you need 100s of them!
7. Three Legged Race
This one always ends up being a station full of giggles. If you have students who are anxious about being paired with another student, or it’s just not suitable.. See if you can work it for staff to do it with students!
8. Sack Race
For the sack race, I use these sacks from Amazon. (Aff. link) I used to use those brown like.. potato style ones.. But god I hated them! They felt awful and they always stunk so bad. So I decided to get an upgrade and it is something I have never regretted!
9. Egg and Spoon Race
This one can really easily be adjusted to students individual levels. Whether you use a tablespoon and a hard boiled egg.. or a wooden cooking spoon and an egg. You can also grab plastic sets on Amazon like this one. (Aff. link) It all depends what you think your students will be able to use best.
10. Duck, Duck, Goose!
This is a game that definitely needs no introduction! A classic game that students always enjoy. But, just incase this game is completely alien to you. Here’s a quick look at how to play it;
- Have the students in the group sit in a circle.
- Nominate one person.
- The one person walks around the circle of students.
- They tap the player’s heads saying ‘duck’ or ‘goose’ i.e.. ‘duck’ ‘duck’ ‘duck’ ‘goose!’
- The player who was ‘goose’ now has to get up and chase the person who tapped their head around the circle. They have to get back to their spot before the other person does.
- Whoever gets to the spot first, keeps the spot. The other player resumes the role of ‘duck’ ‘duck’ ‘goose’
11. Simon Says
A great station for when you need to calm students down a little bit.. Especially when everyone is super excited and full of energy! Students need to listen to the different commands that ‘Simon’ says and follow them. Don’t forget that if the action doesn’t have ‘Simon says’ before it, then anyone who does that action is out!
12. Freeze Dance
I’ve always called this game musical statues. But one of my fellow colleagues called it freeze dance for field day once and now I simply can’t call it anything else! Have some music playing and students dance. When the music stops, everyone has to freeze! Anyone who doesn’t freeze is out. The winner is the last person playing.
13. Limbo Competition
As a student, I actually hated the limbo competition. I am not flexible at all. Then, as I got older, I loved it! I can’t say I’ve taken part in many years though. Motherhood.. Back problems.. Limbo is not something I am physically up to right now! But this is always a fun station.
14. Scavenger Hunt
If you have an area that you can use as a scavenger hunt, definitely do it! Give students clues to try and find the different items to complete the scavenger hunt. Put your group of students into pairs to complete the station. The first pair to find everything on their scavenger hunt wins!
15. Bubble Blowing Contest
I don’t know what it is, but bubbles are just one of those things that every kid seems to love. Having a bubble blowing contest gives your students a nice break and a rest for this station. You can make the contest whatever you want. Who can blow the biggest bubble.. the smallest bubble.. the most bubbles at once etc.
16. Face Painting
Another station to give students a bit of a break. I like to incorporate these slower stations in between higher energy ones so that students don’t get too worn out. Face painting is always fun. Just be sure to get permission forms signed from students families ahead of time!
17. Temporary Tattoos
You can get some fab temporary tattoos now and students always love to show them off. Remember to get permission forms signed from students families ahead of time.
18. Photo Booth with Props
A sporty themed photo booth is the perfect station to add to your field day. Find a sporty backdrop or even just an outdoor ones. Then provide lots of different field day / sport themed props for students to use. Have a member of staff taking photos.
19. Giant Jenga
Giant Jenga (aff. link) is one of those games that you never knew you needed in your life, until you have it. This is probably one of the most popular stations on my field days and the game was definitely worth the investment!
20. Giant Connect Four
Similar to Giant Jenga, this Giant Connect Four (Aff. link) is always very popular. I think any of the giant garden games always go down well because it’s such a novelty. Students love how big the pieces are to take part in and it adds another element to the game. If you’re planning a field day, definitely try to get your hands on some giant games!
