I wanted to touch in today and share with you all some great support groups that I have found on Facebook lately. So, you may not think about looking for autism support groups on Facebook, but there are so many out there! And not just for autism. You can even find support groups on Facebook for ADHD, ADD, ODD, special needs, homeschooling and so much more.
I know Facebook can be quite a negative place for some of us. A lot of people feel like it’s a breach of security. Or they’re fed up of random people adding them and sending game requests. They don’t want to have their photos stolen from them. And I know that all those things can be worrying. But, Facebook has a lot of privacy settings you can change to ensure you’re protected as best as possible.
Why Should I Join the Support Groups?
For a lot of reasons, really. The support groups are made up of families, carers, respite workers and problems too. And this can be really helpful when you are seeking advice or support for anything.
You can also feel more supported in these groups. Talking to your friends and family can be a comfort. But, talking to other parents, who are going through the same thing as you is even better. Because they can relate to you. And you can relate to them. And this is where you can share tips, advice and knowledge too.
And I know the thought of professionals being in these groups can be daunting. But it’s great to be able to get support and advice from them. Because these are people who have attended trainings, courses, workshops and are constantly learning and growing. So they’ll be able to offer you even more advice too.
How Do I Find These Groups?
Just search on the Facebook search bar. Search for what type of group you are looking for. It could be ‘Autism Parents’ or ‘Fragile X Parenting’ or ‘Autism Homeschooling’ etc.
Are you a member of any autism support groups that you find helpful? Share links to them in the comments below for our readers. Don’t forget to join our Facebook support group here. We also have our teaching autism and special education community podcast that you can tune into here.
