I’ve always been a bookworm, since I was a child. And I still love to read now – although the reading material has definitely changed! I’m one of those people who’s an overachiever. I can’t help it. I just always want to go above and beyond.
One of the ways that I love to learn is through reading. So today I wanted to share with you all my top books for special education teachers. These are perfect for learning more and for your professional development.
The links included are Amazon affiliate links. You can however get these books from local libraries, bookstores etc.
Sensory Activities for Autism
How can I NOT start with this book – when my name is on the back of it! And I’m not just saying this because my name is on it. Although I may sound easily impressed – I’m really not. Yet, this book is one that has impressed me the most in many years.
I love to provide fun and engaging sensory activities. But sometimes, it can be really tiring trying to think up new ideas, working out what I need.. how are they going to work?
But, with this handbook… I don’t have to worry about a thing anymore! I LOVE how many activities are included, they’re split up into different senses. Honestly, if like me you love sensory activities, you have to grab a copy of this book! (Be sure to tag me in a photo of it with my name on the back if you get on!) You can get it on Amazon here.
Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew
This is still one of my most loved books. And anyone can benefit from it – teachers, assistants, therapists, even parents! The book really talks about 10 characteristics that help to “illuminate – not define – children with autism”. You can get it on Kindle, paperback or even as as audiobook on Amazon here. I do love an audiobook!
There’s actually a newer version that was released in 2019 which you can find below.
The Out-of-Sync Child
This book is great for learning about SPD – Sensory Processing Disorder. I love the amount of detail included in this book, and it was a huge help for learning more about SPD. You can find it on Amazon here.
101 Games and Activities for Children With Autism, Asperger’s and Sensory Processing Disorders
If you’re a huge believer, like me, about learning through play – then you’re going to love this book. I’ve tried out so many of these activities, and they’ve worked so well. It’s definitely a great tool for you to have in your collection. You can find it on Amazon here.
Behavior Solutions for the Inclusive Classroom
If you want to learn some more about behavior and ensuring your students are included in your general education classroom – this is perfect. It really does give you extra guidance and support to help stop behaviors reoccurring – but also how to research into those behaviors and the reasons why. Find it on Amazon here.
The IEP from A to Z
I get so many questions every week from teachers struggling with creating IEP goals and objectives. But this guide is honestly a life saver. It really does help you to create clear and effective IEPs. Find it on Amazon here.
The Special Needs School Survival Guide
If you’re feeling a bit lost and wondering where to start – put this at the top of your life. This is perfect for really helping you get into your role within the school setting, and your journey. Find it on Amazon here.
The Incredible 5-Point Scale
I was introduced to this book by another teacher – and honestly, I’m so glad it was recommended to me. This book is actually the second edition of the 5-Point Scale. But it’s honestly such a great read. It really does help you to understand how the 5 point scale works. Find it on Amazon here.
The Reason I Jump
I’ve read this book so many times, and I honestly do love it. It’s written by Naoki when he was 13. He talks all about why he does certain things. Such a great read, honestly. If you only try one book – make it this one! Get it on Amazon here.
How to Support Pupils with Autistic Spectrum Condition in Primary School
Do you ever stumble across something that you didn’t know you needed? That’s exactly what happened to me with this book. I love it and I’ve passed it around to so many friends because it really is that valuable. It really does help you understand more about autism, as well as providing a guide for giving them the correct support and ideas for the classroom. You can find it on Amazon here.
There’s also a secondary school version which you can get here.
Obviously there are a huge range of other books available out there, but these ones are just ones that have really stood out to me and helped me with my journey. Have you tried any of these books? Or do you have one that you love that wasn’t on my list? Let me know in the comments down below.
