I don’t know about you, but I LOVE February in the classroom. There are so many amazing themes and topics to teach about. And today I’m sharing my top 14 February classroom theme ideas with you!
Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is an amazing theme to have for the week because you can incorporate so many different skills and activities into this. As well as providing a whole bunch of transferrable life skills.
For example, you can look at the history of Valentine’s Day and where it originated from, or even about St Valentine himself. My students love learning about St Valentine and these are my two go-to resources;
You can also use Valentine’s as a way to teach about kindness, love, family, friendship and so much more! We love to use this daily kindness challenge pack throughout February and it’s always a huge hit.

You can’t go wrong with fairy tales because there are so many learning opportunities and engaging activities you can do with them.

Presidents Day
Presidents’ Day is the third Monday in February. And there are a bunch of activities and great learning opportunities for you to use to celebrate with your students.
From using picture books to teach about Presidents Day, to engaging activities that your students will love. This is such an amazing opportunity to work on a wide range of skills. My kids love to move around, so we always add in a write the room activity. And for my older students, I love giving them these comprehension worksheets where they can learn all about the different presidents.

Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is on the 2nd of February – and it’s an event that’s become really popular in my teaching calendar every year. My students love learning all about groundhog day, and waiting to see what happens with the groundhog!
As you may know, my students love story time. So I’ve put together a list of our favorite Groundhog Day themed picture books for you to check out here.
We use a bunch of different activities for Groundhog Day and we set up different centers around the room. My students specifically love anything hands-on so I try to include that factor into all of my centers. You can check out the different activities I use here.
My older students love these free Groundhog Day comprehension worksheets to learn more about the day and the history of it. Download yours for free here.

Dental Health
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and this is the month I really try to push dental hygiene with my students. I mean, we focus on it year round as a life skill. But during February I really like to pull out some extra lessons and activities for us to work on it.
We like to use this free dice rolling teeth game along with some other hands-on dental health themed centers.

Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is the carnival celebration on or after the Epiphany Christmas feasts. It’s the day before Ash Wednesday – also known as Shrove Tuesday.
I usually do this as a one day theme and have different activities around the classroom. Then we make masks and costumes and have our very own carnival at the end of the day. It’s a fun way to really get my students involved in the process.

Shrove Tuesday
Or as I so fondly refer to it, Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, and honestly, I love it. It’s one of my most favorite days of the year – because I LOVE pancakes!
But there’s so much more to Shrove Tuesday than just pancakes. Check out my Pinterest board here full of fun and engaging ideas!
Family
February is the perfect time for a family unit. It ties in really well with kindness and love for Valentine’s Day – and it’s genuinely a topic that is just so lovely for the classroom. You can have so many learning opportunities linked with family, and students can get to know their own families even more depending on the activities you set. Plus it’s a great opportunity for students families to get involved too!
You can talk about students families at home – or even your classroom family! Making family trees is also a lot of fun and talking about the different relationships and dynamics within families.
There are a bunch of great ideas and activities that you can try out on this topic over on my Pinterest board for you. Just click here to go check them all out!
You can also use this time for students to learn more about themselves and as part of an ‘all about me‘ topic.
Black History Month
Black History Month is a really important month for me and my students. If you follow me on social media, you’ll already know how important I believe it is for us to teach our students all about equality, and understanding different backgrounds, cultures, and just how truly amazing everyone is.
But for Black History Month, I really put an extra focus on just that – Black History. I have students of varying abilities, and it would be easy for me to dismiss it and say my students won’t understand. And sure they won’t understand everything. But they’ll be able to understand a lot of things when taught a certain way. And I really try to focus on what I think my students will be able to understand – and what is beneficial for them to learn and help them to continue to grow as knowledgable and accepting adults.
