Free Groundhog Day Activities
In this blog post today I’m sharing some free Groundhog Day activities that you can use with your students. You’ll find worksheets, crafts, picture book recommendations and so much more in this post!
What is Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd in the United States and Canada.
The holiday is rooted in folklore and tradition, with a quirky belief that a groundhog can predict the weather. According to its ‘legend’, if the groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow (usually due to sunny weather), it will retreat, signaling six more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow (cloudy weather), it’s believed that spring will arrive early.
The most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, resides in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where thousands of people gather each year to watch his prediction.
Why Celebrate Groundhog Day in the Classroom?
Groundhog Day is the perfect opportunity to incorporate a mix of subjects, from science and reading to art and math. It allows students to:
- Explore Weather and Shadows: Teach the basics of weather patterns and the science of shadows.
- Learn About Traditions and Folklore: Discuss the history and cultural significance of Groundhog Day.
- Engage in Hands-On Activities: From crafts to experiments, students can actively participate in learning.
- Boost Creativity: Use Groundhog Day as a theme for storytelling, writing, and imaginative play.

I like to print just a couple of copies and then laminate them. I’ll provide students with dry-wipe pens to complete the activity.
