In this blog post today I’m going to be helping you learn how to make edible paint. If you have a lot of students who mouth things in your classroom… Painting can be quite a stressful activity! Edible paint takes a lot of that stress and pressure off.
I still don’t encourage my students to EAT the paint.. But at least I don’t have to worry about them getting poisoned or getting sick etc if they manage to sneak some paint in their mouth before anyone can intervene.

Materials Needed
- Small bowls or containers to use for mixing
- Spoons – for stirring
- Paintbrushes or fingers for painting
- Paper or food-safe surfaces for painting on
Ingredients Needed
- 1 cup of plain yogurt (Greek.)
- Food coloring (Any colors that you wish to use for your paint)
- 1-2 tablespoons of honey (this is optional)
Instructions
- Place the plain yogurt into separate small bowls. You’re going to want to use one bowl for each color of paint that you want to make.
- Add a few drops of food coloring into the bowls.
- Mix the food coloring and yogurt together. Add more food coloring if needed to get the color you want. Make sure it’s all mixed in and combined.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey to each bowl – although this is optional and can be skipped! Mix altogether.
- Dip fingers, paintbrushes, sponges etc into the mixtures to use as paint.
If the paint stays well (without being mixed all different colors), I often will store them in airtight containers in the fridge to re-use over the next day… But make sure to check before using it to ensure it’s still fresh.
You can also crush cookies / cereal to mix into the yogurt mixture to make a textured paint if you want to.
