I am so excited to give you a sneak peek look today into my January task boxes that I use with my students. We love to use task boxes for so many reasons, and you can find out more in this podcast episode.
You can also download my free Beginners Guide to Task Boxes eBook here.
Monthly Task Boxes
I use task boxes on an everyday basis with my students and I have them set up in a specific way. This is so that I can be constantly rotating task boxes between my students and through the year – meaning nobody gets bored or fed up!
My task boxes are stored in photo storage boxes which I get from Michael’s. Side note – wait until they go on sale – you can get them super cheap and this is when I generally stock up!
I have 15 of those photo storage box carry cases at the moment and they have the following task box themes;
- Fine Motor
- Life Skills
- Math
- January
- February
- March
- April
- May
- June
- July
- August
- September
- October
- November
- December
Today I’m going to be sharing some of the task boxes that I use through January with my students and where you can get them from. (If you just wanna skip the photos and grab them right away instead, just click here.)

2D or 3D Shape Sorting Task Cards
In this task box, students have to work out if the shape shown in the image is a 2D or 3D shape. Students need to use a clothing peg (or other manipulative) to select their students.
Counting Pompom Snowballs
In this task box, students need to follow the instructions on each card to place the amount of snowballs onto the scene. We love to use white pom poms for this. You can make it a little harder by having students use jumbo tweezer to pick up and place the snow balls.
Feeding the Squirrel Color Acorns
If you have color object acorns already in your classroom, this is perfect. If not, the task box comes with printed out color acorns for your students to use to match to feed to the squirrel.
Matching Opposites
In this task box, students need to match together the opposites to complete the puzzles. We like to start with this style of puzzle before we work towards using jigsaw puzzles which are a little more complex for students to put together.
Missing Letters Alphabet Sequencing
If you have magnetic letters, this task box is the perfect opportunity to dig them out and have students working with them. If not, this task box set comes with printable letters for your students to use. This is a great activity for students to work on recognizing the missing letters of the alphabet, and being able to sequence the alphabet.
New Year Ten Frame Task Cards
Whether you use bingo dabbers, stickers or even just a dry-wipe pen, your students will love these New Year themed task cards. Get your students working on their number formation, ten frame and counting skills – all inside one task box!
Penguin Feelings Matching
Whenever I teach a skill to a student, I want to make sure that they’re able to use that skill in a variety of different situations. Feelings can be really hard for my students to grasp. So this penguin themed feelings task box is a great way for them to continue to work on recognizing facial expressions and feelings.
Penguin 2D Shape Matching
Another great task box for carrying over those skills. This time, students need to identify what 2D shape the penguin is and then find the matching shape symbol.
Counting Pompoms in Gumball Machine
Now if you’re feeling brave and you have students who will be safe for this – you can purchase real gum balls for students to place in the machine on each task box. If not, I’d recommend using mini pom poms like we have here. You can even use those jumbo tweezers again to really get students working.
2D Shape Spelling Puzzles
This task box contains multiple 2D shape spelling puzzles. Students need to place the puzzle pieces into the correct order to spell the 2D shape in order to form the puzzle and 2D shape image correctly.
Winter Measuring Task Cards
This task box will have students working on height, weight and length in a fun winter theme.
Winter Verb, Noun and Adjective Matching
These puzzles were actually the perfect task box for working on a range of skills. I had my students identifying the images, thinking of their own sentences, reading the sentences. And of course, identifying whether the sentence is a verb, noun or adjective.
