From a young age, I remember Remembrance Day has always been a huge event in schools around the area. I remember ever year wearing a poppy and doing different activities. And today, I wanted to share some Remembrance Day activities for kids that will help your students learn all about this important event.
Working Together
One of the main activities that we like to do with our students is to work as a team and put together a display. This gets all of our students working together – and then we’re able to showcase the final result.
We unveiled the finished display in our assembly. In the assembly we sing songs, watch videos about soldiers and we hold a short silence in memory. We also take the time to invite veteran soldiers, and current soldiers into our school to listen to their stories and ask questions.
For our soldiers, we like to create postcards and thank you cards and hand them to them when they come to visit. In the past, we’ve also put together some thank you boxes in the past to send over to soldiers who are serving.
This is a great opportunity for our students to be more involved in the community. And it’s a hands-on opportunity for them to be able to learn more about our soldiers and the work that they do. As well as celebrating Remembrance Day and remembering our past soldiers.
Free Resource
Down below I’ve included a free resource for you to download which is a soldier writing prompt. You can use this to display around your school for Remembrance Day or use as a letter template to send to soldiers for your appreciation. Click here to download it.
We also spent some time doing different Remembrance Day crafts. Check out the photos below to see some of the crafts we made.
Kids love doing these style of crafts – they love putting them together and being able to see the finished product.
I hope you all have a great time celebrating Remembrance Day. It’s a great way for your students to be involved in a community event and show their thanks and support.
What have you got planned for Remembrance Day with your students? Let us know in the comments below. Be sure to share this post with your colleagues who may find the activities and free resource helpful.
