One of the main things our children struggle with is school uniform. It can be itchy, the label can be too big, it can be too baggy or too small. Your child may even find it too tight around the neck. there are so many different ways that school uniform doesn’t suit our children. Mainly because of their sensory needs.
Marks and Spencer have worked with the National Autistic Society to make a sensory friendly school uniform.
They have a non-iron short sleeve shirt. And they’ve replaced the first four buttons with velcro. This is a life saver for many of our children as it means;
1) they can be more independent in getting dressed. And, they don’t have to struggle and try to work out the buttons
2) they can open and close the top of the shirt as they want.
They also have easy wear trousers that are pull up – no buttons or zips! They’ve also removed the back pocket off the trousers so that they’ll be comfier to wear and sit down in. They’ve even removed the care label from inside the trousers to inside the pocket. So, it won’t rub or touch the individual’s skin.
Honestly, I’m so impressed with Marks and Spencer. They’ve worked hard to make this sensory friendly school uniform. I highly recommend trying them out this new school year.
Back to school can be a frightening time for many of our students. It can be a lot of emotions all at once for them. They want to get back in routine, but they don’t want to get up early. I always want my kids to be prepared for going back to school. This is why I use this social story. IWe’ve also got one for when we get a new school uniform!
