One question that I get asked a lot is ‘Should I dye pasta with food coloring or paint?’ And today I’m going to be providing you with some comparisons!

For me personally, food coloring is my go-to.. But I have used paint now and again too. You can find my blog posts for how to use each of these to dye below;

Today I am going to be sharing some of the different results that I have got from dyeing pasta shapes with food coloring, compared to paint. Hopefully this will help you to work out with method you would like to use.

Here are the results of what our pasta looked like after dyeing with food coloring.

The green pasta on the left of the photos below has been dyed with food coloring, while the pasta on the right has paint. Hopefully this will help you have a visual of the difference.

Personally for me, I prefer using food coloring.. And I do prefer to use rice over pasta. I feel like the rice just dyes better. But the pasta provides a great base for different sensory bins… But I think the paint covers the pasta better.

If you are not pressed for time, I would probably use a paintbrush to help spread the paint more evenly to cover the pasta. Whereas I am all about the fast option (because there’s always so much to do!) so I prefer to use the zip bag and shake method.
