I’m so excited to share this skittle pumpkin experiment with you today!
You’ve probably seen all the amazing skittle videos that are doing the rounds on Facebook right now. If not, basically it’s where people are laying skittles around the edge of a plate, pouring water inside and then watching the water pull the colours from the skittles into the middle of the plate.
Which is pretty cool, right?
BUT.. Have you tried a PUMPKIN version yet?
When I saw the skittle video, I knew I wanted to incorporate it into the classroom. And I figured a pumpkin one would be so fun to do with my students around Halloween time. My students love science experiments – and this one is great because it’s super quick and easy to put together.. And it’s a great visual experiment for students.

Material List
- Orange and brown (or dark purple we used) skittles – we bought big bags and then just pulled out the colours we needed for this activity, we let the children eat a few and kept the rest for the rainbow skittle experiment.
- Water
- Plate – find one with a deep dip in the middle to help make the mixture go all the way around the plate.
Instructions
- Lay out orange skittles around the edge of your plate in the shape of a pumpkin. Try to lay them real close together.
- Add 4 dark purple skittles at the top of the ‘pumpkin.’
- Pour water into the middle of the plate until it fulls up the middle right up to the skittles on the edging.
- Sit and watch as the color drains from the skittles into the water and creates a pumpkin.
