Ingredients You’ll Need
For the pancakes:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus extra for cooking)
- A few drops of orange food coloring (optional, for that pumpkin-orange look)
For the decoration:
- ½ cup icing sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (to make a smooth icing)
- Candy eyes or small chocolate chips
- Blackberries or small round candies (for spiders)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Make the Pancake Batter
In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix milk, egg, and melted butter. Combine the two, stirring until just smooth. Add orange food coloring if desired.
Step 2: Cook the Pancakes
Heat a non-stick frying pan or griddle over medium heat and brush lightly with butter. Pour the batter in small circles (about ¼ cup each). Cook for 1–2 minutes on one side, flip, and cook another 1–2 minutes until golden and fluffy. Transfer to a plate and let cool slightly.
Step 3: Make the Icing
Mix icing sugar and milk in a bowl until you have a thick but pipeable consistency. Spoon it into a piping bag or a sandwich bag with the corner snipped off.
Step 4: Draw the Webs
Pipe circles on top of each pancake – one large outer circle and two smaller inner circles. Then use a toothpick to drag lines outward from the center to create the web pattern.
Step 5: Add the Spiders
Place a blackberry or round candy on the web for the spider’s body. Add a smaller piece (or chocolate chip) for the head, and finish with candy eyes.
Tips for Success
- Want shortcut pancakes? Use a boxed mix to save time.
- For thicker icing: Add a little more powdered sugar.
- For a healthier option: Use Greek yogurt or honey instead of icing for the web.
- Make-ahead tip: Cook pancakes the night before and decorate in the morning.
Fun Classroom or Family Ideas
- Classroom Halloween breakfast: Make mini pancakes and let students decorate their own spiderwebs with icing and fruit.
- Family activity: Set up a “pancake decorating station” with icing tubes, fruit, and chocolate chips.
- Party platter: Stack spiderweb pancakes on a spooky black serving tray with fake spiders and pumpkins for a festive look.
