We LOVE to use our handprints to make crafts in our classroom, and this time we’ve made a leprechaun! Celebrating St Patrick’s Day is always lots of fun in our classroom and it’s definitely one of our favourite holidays. You can find so many great activities for St Patrick’s Day, including this handprint leprechaun! Read on below to find out how we made this craft.
Now, one of the best things about this craft is the fact that it’s pretty self explanatory. You don’t need to have a full set of instructions on how to make it. But, I’ve included some quick instructions below for you just so you can get everything ready that you need.
You Will Need
- Orange paint
- Skin colour paint – any tone you wish!
- Small googley eyes
- Black marker pen
- Green paint
- Paintbrush
- Hat cut out of green foam
- Small rectangle cut out of black foam
- White card
Directions
- We always like to start with the painting so that it gets time to dry. So, first of all, we painted the children’s fingers and the base of their palm with orange paint. Then, we painted the middle of their palm with the skin colour paint of their choice. (We’re all about equality and use every chance we can to work on this important topic)
- Now, your students hand is painted with both colours. Place their hand down onto a white piece of card. Leave it there for a few seconds and gently push down so that all the paint transfers from their hand to the craft. If you’ve never done this before – be quick and make sure your students don’t move their hand around (smudges!)
- Move this card to the side to dry.
- Now, pull out your next piece of white card. Have your students dip their fingers into green paint (not too much!) and then dab into the four corners of the card to make shamrock pictures.
- Once the handprint has dried, cut out around it.
- Next, stick your green hat on top of the handprint and the black rectangle on top of this.
- Using a black marker pen, draw the face onto the leprechaun.
- Finally, stick your leprechaun onto the middle of your white card (with shamrocks on the corner)
