What is Clear the List for Teachers?

In this blog post today I’m answering the question.. What is Clear the List for Teachers? You may have seen the #ClearTheList movement doing the rounds on social media over recent years.. And today I want to share a little bit more about that and how you can get involved in this amazing movement too!

The #ClearTheList movement is all about supporting teachers by helping them stock their classrooms with the supplies, materials, and resources they need. Teachers share their classroom wish lists, often through Amazon or similar platforms, and generous individuals, organizations, and fellow educators step up to clear the list by purchasing items for them.

It may sound like a small gesture, but for teachers and their students, it can make an enormous difference.

Why Do Teachers Need Help Clearing Their Lists?

If you’re not in education, you might be wondering why teachers are sharing wish lists in the first place. Shouldn’t schools be providing all the supplies students need?

In a perfect world… Absolutely. But in reality, many teachers end up spending hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of dollars out of their own pockets each year just to ensure their students have what they need to learn and thrive.

From basics like pencils, crayons, and notebooks to more specialized items like sensory tools, flexible seating, and learning games, the cost of setting up and running a classroom adds up fast. And for special education teachers, that list often grows even longer with the need for visual supports, adaptive tools, fine motor materials, and calming sensory items.

While schools do their best, funding gaps are a real and ongoing challenge. The #ClearTheList movement helps bridge that gap, allowing teachers to equip their classrooms without carrying the financial burden alone.

The Impact of #ClearTheList on Teachers and Students

Let’s be honest, teaching is hard. It’s emotionally, mentally, and physically demanding. Teachers pour their hearts into their classrooms every single day, going above and beyond to ensure their students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

When someone contributes to a teacher’s wish list, it’s about so much more than just sending a package of markers or a pack of fidget toys. It’s a message to that teacher: “I see you. I appreciate you. I’m here to support you.”

That small act of kindness lifts a huge weight off a teacher’s shoulders.

And the impact doesn’t stop there. When teachers have the supplies they need, students benefit too:

  • They have access to better tools and materials that support their learning.
  • Classrooms become more inclusive, with adaptive tools for students with special needs.
  • Teachers can focus more on teaching and less on stretching limited resources.
  • Students feel more engaged and excited about learning in a well-equipped space.

In many ways, clearing a teacher’s list clears a path for students to thrive.

How You Can Get Involved

The beauty of the #ClearTheList movement is that anyone can participate. You don’t need to be a big corporation or have deep pockets. Even purchasing one item from a teacher’s list makes a difference.

Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Search the hashtag #ClearTheList on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. You’ll find teachers sharing their wish lists, many of them working in underfunded schools or with high-needs students.
  2. Choose a list that resonates with you. Maybe it’s a local teacher, a special education classroom, or a first-year teacher just getting started.
  3. Purchase an item or two from their list. It could be as simple as a box of crayons or a pack of dry-erase markers.. It all helps!!
  4. Share the movement! Even if you can’t contribute financially, spreading the word helps more people see these lists and potentially lend a hand.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

The #ClearTheList movement is such a beautiful example of how small acts of kindness can ripple out to make a big impact. By supporting teachers, we’re supporting students, classrooms, and the future of education.

So the next time you see a #ClearTheList post, take a moment to see how you can help. And if you’re a teacher yourself, don’t be afraid to share your list! You deserve the same love and support that you so freely give to your students.

    1. Hi everyone! I am teaching sixth grade ,7th grade and eighth grade business/computer classes. One goal that I started a few years back was to purchase specific supplies for kids that come to school that don’t have. For example, last year I requested hygiene supplies. This year I am focusing on two students in particular that need new lunchboxes.Whatever I’ve received I’m beyond thankful for! I have been a teacher for 12 years. This past school year, I ended up being hospitalized and given the difficult choice of staying in the classroom or resigning to focus on recovering from my medical emergency. I made the decision to resign and spent the rest of the school year regaining my strength back. I am now preparing to switch gears and will be teaching general education for the first time! Any help in creating an inviting and academic-rich environment for my new students will be greatly appreciated!

  2. 🫶🏻 Thank you for supporting teachers and their kiddos!! I will be going into my 17th year of teaching littles. I love teaching little kids. I love watching them learn through play. You’ll find learning toys on my wish list. These resources are used to teach the children to independently and cooperatively practice skills previously taught while the teacher is able to conduct small group instruction. I also want to create a warm home like environment. Many items on my list will help me make our classroom a warm cozy organized home. Please consider blessing my “fresh batch” of Batchelor Kids and ensuring that they will have a magical kindergarten experience 💙.

We provide everything for the students in our small rural school (we are a PreK-8 School with just under 200 students total). Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!

My name is Ms.LaFond and I am a BCBA at a small public charter school. I get to teach, laugh with, grow alongside of and advocate for some of the coolest students around. It can be hard to have all the supplies and materials needed for a variety of students at any given moment. Putting a list together helps meet some of those needs more immediately. I cannot begin to share how much it is appreciated!

  8. As I begin my 4th year as a Workforce Development Coordinator at a private school for students with special needs, I’m excited to share that this year I’ve been asked to teach a brand new course: Intro to Entrepreneurship for 9th to 12th grade Special Education students.

While I’m thrilled to take on this role, I will be paying for all classroom supplies out of pocket. If you’re in a position to help, even a small contribution would mean so much to me and my students. Every single item makes a difference and helps create a more engaging and hands-on experience.

💛 Whether you choose to donate or simply share this post, I deeply appreciate your support. Thank you for helping me build something special for my students.
