In this blog post today I’m sharing our top 10 Memorial Day picture books for kids. These books are ones that we have used in our classroom and that my students have enjoyed. 1. Hero Mom
My students love this book. It’s a great one for learning all about amazing moms and all of the things that they do to make the world a safer place. This one is all about military moms.

And following on from Hero Mom.. Is Hero Dad! Another great book for learning all about dads and how they make the world a safer place.

3. A Day for Rememberin’
This book is based on the history of the first Memorial Day. We love this book and it’s perfect for taking our students back in time to learn about the history of Memorial Day.

4. My 1st Book of Military Superheroes
We love this book and it’s perfect for my younger students. With this book you’ll be able to learn all about the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Space Force.

5. Memorial Day Surprise
Every year Marco goes to the town’s Memorial Day parade. He stops by his grandfather’s house on the way there except.. This year he gets to see his grandfather leading the parade! This one is such a sweet story and one of our favorites.

6. F is for Flag
While Flag Day is on June 14th and not Memorial Day.. This book is still perfect to help students read about the flag and what it means.. Unity.. Welcome.. A reminder.. And the fact that our country is one big family.

7. Rolling Thunder
In this book there are lines and lines of bikes.. With their engines roaring and rumbling. Your students will get to learn about Memorial Day in Washington, DC where more than a million veterans and their supports gather for the Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom!

8. The Poppy Lady
This book is all about Moina Belle Michael. In this book, students will follow Moina, a schoolteacher from Georgia who worked to establish the red poppy as the symbol to honor and remember soldiers.

9. Rags: Hero Dog of WWI: A True Story
I love when we can find books based on true stories to teach my students. And this one is probably one of my favorite ones that I’ve ever come across. In this book, Private James Donovan of the United States Army stumbles upon a small dog in Paris. He named him Rags and the two become inseparable. Rags even accompanies James on the battlefield and delivers messages and morale boosts to the soldiers. At the end of the war, When James is severely injured and sent back to the United States, Rags refuses to leave his side.

10. H is for Honor
This book talks about the Armed Services and what it means for honor, privilege and sacrifice. It also shares about how this effects the lives of military families. It’s a great book for learning more about our military personnel.
