10 Halloween Picture Books for Kids

Today I’m sharing my favorite 10 Halloween picture books for kids. My students love when I put out new picture books for each month / season / holiday and Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year! There are so many great Halloween themed books that your students will love.. And they can tie in perfectly to adding extension activities, sensory bins, lesson plans, cookery etc.

1. Funny Bones

This has always been one of my absolute favorite books to pull out each year for Halloween. I loved the Funny Bones series when I was young.. And it’s so fun to be able to pull it back out for my students to use now!

2. The Night Before Halloween

Get ready for Halloween with these monsters and goblins. We love reading this as Halloween is approaching!

3. Room on the Broom

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t love thus book! It’s one of our absolute favorites.. Julia Donaldson is amazing!

4. Mr. Men Halloween Party

Everyone loves the Mr Men and Little Miss books and this one is no different! It’s Mr. Happy’s turn to throw a Halloween party!

5. Meg’s Castle

The Meg and Mog books are always popular with my students and this one is perfect to pull out for your Halloween library! In the book, Meg, Mog and Owl stay in a castle… Where they meet ghosts and spooky white knights, fight brave battles and even tuck into a big feast!

6. The Good, the Bad and the Spooky

If you and your students are fans of the bad seed.. Then this is the Halloween book for you! Halloween is the Bad Seed’s favorite holiday of the year. But what’s a seed to do when he can’t find a show-stopping costume for the big night?

7. How to Catch a Witch

The ‘How to Catch a….’ books are probably our favorite series in the classroom right now. And this one is perfect to use in the run up to Halloween!

8. The Spooky Wheels on the Bus

This book is perfect for working on counting.. As well as being perfect for the lead up to Halloween! The bus races through town picking up passengers along the way. Count from 1 spooky bus up to 10 goofy ghosts!

9. At the Old Haunted House

At the old haunted house
In a room with no sun
Lived a warty green witch
And her wee witchy one.

This book is so much fun and one that my students love to pull out.

10. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Ghost!

Another one of our favorite book series is the old lady series. My students love listening to the stories of what the old lady swallows. And this ghost one is perfect for you to use for Halloween!
