Tomorrow is World Autism Day, one of the most important dates in my diary. I wanted to share this Autism Awareness craft with you that my students made to put on display around our classroom.
We spend time all year long trying to spread autism awareness – and acceptable too. But, in April, we always step it up that extra gear. We celebrate Autism Awareness (and acceptable!) all month long. We do activities every day and we go out into the community.
Today, we made these crafts to go on our windows. We chose the colours because that’s the colours of our local autism charity – who are AMAZING with not only the students in class, but their parents and families too.
So, do you want to make some of these bright crafts for your classroom? Read on below to find out how we make them.
What Do I Need?
- White Paper
- Jigsaw template
- Scissors
- Glue
- Laminator
- Laminating Sheet
- Tissue Paper
What Do I Do?
First, we print out a piece of a jigsaw puzzle and cut it out. We used this one. You can also look on Google Images to search for jigsaw puzzle templates.
Next, we used blu-tac to stick the cut out template onto black card. Then, using a marker, we drew around the puzzle template onto the black card.
Then, we took off the white paper template and followed the lines on the black card to cut out the puzzle piece.
Now is probably the hardest part of the whole craft. You need to cut out the middle of the puzzle piece, leaving just a small border/outline of the puzzle.
Next, get some tissue paper. We used pink and purple to support our local autism charity. Cut the pieces of tissue paper up into small pieces. They can be different shapes and sizes.
Stick the puzzle piece onto a laminating sheet and then glue the inside of the puzzle piece too.
Pick up the tissue paper pieces one by one – your students may try to rush this and do a handful at a time. And place them on the inside of the jigsaw piece onto the laminating sheet
Once you’ve finished putting the tissue paper pieces onto the craft, put it through your laminator.
Wait for the laminate to cool down and then cut around the puzzle piece.
Which will leave you with this sun catcher!
Use blu-tac to put your sun catcher up on the window and watch how beautiful they look when the sun shines through.
How do you celebrate Autism Awareness Month in your classroom? Will you be making any crafts? I love to hear from you all! Leave me a comment below. You can find more autism awareness activities here.
