What is a Sun Catcher Craft?
A sun catcher craft is a fun and creative activity where your students can design and create translucent decorations that catch and reflect sunlight. These crafts often use colorful materials like tissue paper, transparent plastic, or glass-like components to let light shine through. They produce beautiful, glowing effects when placed on or near a window.
Sun catchers are not only visually captivating but also serve as a perfect blend of art and science for your students. By engaging in this type of craft, children can explore how light interacts with materials, while also practicing key creative skills like color blending and design.

Instructions
- Print out one copy of the cauldron template. (Download link below.)
- Cut around the cauldron template. I cut it smooth so end up cutting off the handles on the sides – see photos below for examples.

- Place the cut out cauldron template on top of black card and draw around it. Do this for however many crafts you are going to make. Each student will have one.
- Cut out around the cauldron, then cut out around the inside of the cauldron leaving a border.

- Stick the border of the cauldron onto a laminating sheet.
- Rip up pieces of tissue paper.
- Add some glue to the inside of the cauldron and stick the ripped up pieces of tissue paper here.
- I also like to scrunch up some of the tissue paper on top of the cauldron to look like bubbles.
- Sprinkle some gold glitter inside the cauldron.
- Put through the laminator.
- Once laminated, cut around the cauldron and then hang it up on your window!

Educational Benefits:
Below are just 4 benefits for your students working on this craft;
- Fine Motor Skills: Cutting out the cauldron shape and handling small pieces of tissue paper help children develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
