Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Wrap the Toilet Roll

Start by wrapping your toilet paper roll in orange or black paper. Secure it with glue or tape. This forms the spider’s body.

If you want to skip the paper, you can paint the roll instead – just let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Add the Legs

Cut four black pipe cleaners in half so you have eight shorter pieces. These will be your spider’s legs!

Poke small holes or make slits on each side of the toilet roll (four on each side). Insert the pipe cleaners through the holes and bend them slightly to form legs that curve outward.

Step 3: Attach the Eyes

Glue two googly eyes near the top of the roll. You can use large ones for a silly look or smaller ones if you want something a bit spookier.

Step 4: Add a Smile

Cut a small smile shape from black paper or simply draw it on with a marker. Stick or draw it below the eyes – now your spider is friendly, not frightening!

Step 5: Display Your Spider

Once the glue has dried, your spider is ready! Display it on a shelf, hang it with string to “crawl” down from the ceiling, or make several for a spooky Halloween classroom display.

Classroom and Home Activity Ideas

  • Science Connection: Pair this craft with a mini lesson about spiders and their habitats.
  • Halloween Décor: Create a “spider colony” display on the classroom wall or in a window.
  • Fine Motor Activity: Twisting and bending pipe cleaners helps little hands build strength.
  • Sensory Play: Use these spiders in a Halloween sensory bin with fake webbing and plastic insects!

Tips for Success

  • For younger children, pre-cut the paper and poke the pipe cleaner holes to make assembly easier.
  • Use different colored pipe cleaners for a fun, rainbow spider effect.
  • Add a piece of string and tape it inside the roll to make a hanging spider decoration.
  • Make a glittery version with sparkly paper or sequins for a magical Halloween twist.
