What Are Ice Cream Movement Breaks?
These ice cream movement vreaks are a set of printable cards, each featuring a fun, ice cream-themed action for students to act out. Think:
- “Melt slowly to the floor like a puddle”
- “Shake like sprinkles falling everywhere”
- “Spin around slowly like soft serve coming out of the machine”
They’re playful, low-prep, and full of opportunities to get kids up and moving while also encouraging imaginative play and sensory regulation.
Each card is super visual and simple to follow, so whether your students are verbal, nonverbal, reading, or not quite there yet, it’s accessible and adaptable. I recommend cutting and laminating the cards so they last all summer (and beyond!).
Why Use Themed Movement Breaks?
Movement breaks aren’t just a cute add-on to your schedule. They’re essential for helping students reset, regulate, and re-engage throughout the day. Especially in special education settings, where students may struggle with attention, transitions, sensory processing, or emotional regulation, movement can be the magic key to getting back on track.
Now add in a super fun ice cream theme? That’s a win-win. Here’s what makes themed movement breaks like these so powerful:
- They add novelty – Kids get excited when something feels new or silly. An ice cream-themed wiggle? Yes please.
- They promote sensory integration – Many of the movements target vestibular and proprioceptive input, helping students feel grounded and calm.
- They support transitions – Use them between tasks, before or after lessons, or as a reset during rough patches.
- They build imagination and language – Actions like “drive an ice cream truck” or “catch the melted drips” spark playful thinking and descriptive language.
- They help reduce stress – A few giggles and a little movement can work wonders for anxious or overstimulated students.
How to Use the Ice Cream Movement Break Cards
You can use these cards in so many different ways depending on your classroom setup and student needs. Here are some easy, no-fuss ideas:
Morning Warm-Up
Start the day with a quick “ice cream stretch session.” Let students pick 2–3 cards as part of their morning routine to get the wiggles out and start the day with a smile.
Brain Break Between Tasks
Pull a card or two between seated tasks or transitions to help students regulate. Bonus points if you do it with them!
Sensory Break Station
Laminate the cards and put them on a binder ring at your calm corner or sensory area. Students can choose a card when they need a movement break or body reset.
Dice Game Version
Assign numbers to each card and roll a dice to decide which movement to do next. It adds a fun game-like twist!
Summer Theme Day or Ice Cream Party
Planning an end-of-year celebration or summer theme day? These are the perfect active component to add between crafts, snacks, or learning stations.
Skills These Cards Support
This isn’t just movement for movement’s sake. These actions are intentionally designed to support:
- Gross motor development – Big body movements like jumping, squatting, and twisting
- Motor planning – Following movement instructions and coordinating body parts
- Body awareness – Understanding how your body moves through space
- Social interaction – Take turns drawing cards, do movements together, or pair with group songs
- Language – Pair movements with descriptive words, sequencing, or storytelling
You can also adapt the cards to support IEP goals by tracking participation, adding visuals for sequencing, or using AAC to describe each movement.
