In this blog post today I’m sharing instructions for how to dye pasta with paint. I prefer using paint to dye pasta and rice because it’s easier and less messy to clean up than food dye. The pasta lasts really well, so I usually spend some time before the back to school season prepping pasta, rice and chickpeas in all different colors so that I can easily reach for them throughout the school year for sensory activities.
I’ve also put together some links to where you can get all the different types of pasta and items that I’ve used within this blog post to make it easy for you.

Materials Needed
- Pasta Shapes
- Zip Lock Bags
- Child Friendly Washable Paint
- Measuring Cups
- Distilled Vinegar
- Baking Paper (Or Foil)
- Baking Trays
Instructions
- Pour pasta into a sandwich bag.
- Add 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar into the sandwich bag.
- Pour paint into the bag. This is usually a bit of an experiment and you can just keep adding more paint if it’s needed.
- Zip the bag shut and shake it really well.
- Once all of the pasta is covered in paint, lay it out on baking paper on top of baking trays.
- I usually pop them outside in the sun to help speed up the process of drying.
- Once fully dry, I store them in zip bags.
I like to get my students involved in this process too.. And I like to pop the zip lock bag into a large measuring jug just so that it can help keep the bag open to make it easier to pour into.
