Description
This social story is a great read for students who may need some support and help with calming down. The social story gives examples of different situations that may make the reader feel sad, angry or lonely and examples of different techniques that they can use to help themselves calm down.
Many students with autism are visual learners and like to learn through seeing something in action. This book comes complete with matching, simple yet engaging graphics to help describe what is being said on the page.
Comes in col option only – no b/w availability, however you can print in grayscale.
Pages included are;
♦ Sometimes, I want to play with my friends, but they want to play on their own.
♦ Sometimes, someone else may knock over my tower that I built.
♦ Sometimes, I might want to play with a toy but someone else is playing with it.
♦ Sometimes, I might lose a game.
♦ Sometimes, someone may touch me. I don’t like being touched.
♦ All of these things may make me feel sad, angry or lonely.
♦ But, I can try and calm myself down.
♦ First, I could take myself to sit down in a quiet area.
♦ I can ask my teacher for help.
♦ I can breathe in and out, counting to 10.
♦ I can count to 10 in my head.
♦ I can ask my friends to help make me feel happy again.
♦ I can hug my teddy.
♦ My friend can give me a hug.
♦ I can listen to music.
♦ I can squeeze my stress ball.
♦ I can have a sensory break.
♦ I can read a book.
♦ I can ask my teacher if I can go for a walk.
♦ I can ask my teacher if I can go outside for some fresh air.
♦ My teacher will be very proud of me for calming myself down.
♦ My friends will be happy that I calmed myself down.
♦ But most importantly, I will be proud of myself for calming myself.
♦ If I find it hard to calm myself, that’s ok too. I can think of ways to help myself next time.
♦ My teacher can help me think of new ways to calm myself too.
I recommend printing out each of the individual pages, laminating them and then binding them into a book so it will be easier for students to read – or be read to, as well as being stronger and longer lasting.
