Reindeer Train CVC Spelling Activity | Christmas Literacy Centers | Special Ed

Bring festive fun into your literacy centers with this hands-on Reindeer Train CVC Spelling Activity. Students will build and spell CVC words by matching picture cards to the correct letters, placing each “present” onto the reindeer train. This engaging, seasonal activity supports early reading and phonics skills while keeping learning playful and interactive.

This resource is designed to strengthen:

  • CVC word recognition
  • Letter-sound correspondence
  • Early spelling and blending
  • Fine motor skills
  • Independent and small group work habits

Perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and special education classrooms, as well as homeschool setups. It works beautifully for centers, literacy tubs, morning work, 1:1 instruction, task boxes, and early intervention programs.

What’s Included:

  • Reindeer Train base mat
  • CVC picture cards (presents)
  • Letter cards (letter presents to build the words)

How to Use:

  1. Print all pieces
  2. Laminate the train mat and all presents for durability.
  3. Cut out the CVC picture presents and letter presents.
  4. Place a CVC picture present on the train mat.
  5. Students choose the matching letters and place them on the train to spell the CVC word.
  6. Extend the activity by having students write the word with a dry-erase marker instead of using the letter presents.

Why Teachers Love It:

  • Clear visuals and simple formatting help reduce overwhelm
  • Repeated practice builds confidence with CVC words
  • Seasonal theme makes it exciting, fun, and highly motivating
  • Can be adapted for multiple ability levels
  • Ideal for both independent and teacher-supported learning

Use during the winter season, in December Christmas centers, or as a low-prep literacy activity that blends skill-building with holiday joy. Students will love “loading” the train with the correct presents and saying the words as they build them.
