Today in this blog post I’m going to be discussing the benefits and drawbacks of using iPads with autistic children.
When it comes to using iPads for children, there are divided opinions. However, many parents, families, and education professionals have found that iPads can be helpful in numerous ways, especially for our students. In this blog post, I will explore some of the benefits of using iPads for our autistic students.
1. Communication
One of the most significant benefits of using iPads for our autistic students is the ability to use communication apps.
Apps like Proloquo2Go function like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and allow children to communicate effectively. The symbols can be customized and easily accessible, making communication more comfortable and efficient. Additionally, the app reads each symbol aloud, allowing the child to “talk” to the parent or caregiver.
2. Interactive Stories
Children love interactive stories, and apps like TinyTap provide an excellent platform for them. With bright graphics and interactive features, children can engage with the story and participate in it. This can be an excellent way to improve their imagination and creativity.
3. Learning Apps
Many learning apps have proven to be invaluable for our students. These apps have helped children learn basic math and language skills. Children enjoy using these apps, and it can be a fun way to learn.
4. Exposure to Different Languages
Our students can benefit from exposure to different languages, and iPads provide an excellent opportunity for that. Children can change the language settings of the apps, exposing them to different languages. This can be helpful in improving their communication skills and overall development.
5. Timer
Many students benefit from visual aids, and the timer on iPads can be an excellent tool. It is easy to use and transportable, making it an ideal tool for parents and caregivers.
6. Waiting
Waiting can be stressful for our children, and iPads can be an excellent tool to keep them occupied. Parents can load nursery rhyme songs or games to keep the child engaged and reduce their anxiety.
7. Photos
Photos can be an excellent communication aid for autistic children. Parents can take photos of things that interest the child or are relevant to their daily routine. This can help the child understand their surroundings better.
8. Exposes Them to Words/Language
Most apps/games are full of spoken language and words, which can expose children to different vocabulary and pronunciation. This can help improve their communication and language skills.
9. Sign Language
Apps like Mr. Tumble and Singing Hands provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn sign language. Parents can download these apps, and children can learn signs naturally on their iPads.
10. Guided Access
Guided Access is an excellent feature that can help parents control the apps their children use. It allows parents to lock the iPad onto the app of their choice, ensuring that their child stays focused.
11. Games
Games can be a great way for children to learn new skills and improve their social skills. Many games have winning or losing situations, which can help children learn how to accept both outcomes.
Downsides
Now, like anything in life, there are going to be downsides of using iPads with your autistic children. Some of these are going to be;
- They can break. So I’d recommend investing in a heavy duty cover. (I’ll link my favorite at the bottom of this post).
- They’re expensive! And some of the apps can be expensive to invest in as well.
- They can become a distraction. Our children may be drawn to the bright colors and sounds of iPads – which can make it difficult for them to focus on other tasks/activities.
- They’re not always necessary. There are other devices/tools that may be more appropriate for your child.
- And like with any electronic device – they can be addictive! Children may become overly attached to their iPad and this can lead to other problems. So it’s important to monitor usage and set clear boundaries with it.
Conclusion
In conclusion, iPads can be an excellent tool for our autistic children. From communication aids to learning apps, iPads have proven to be helpful in improving the overall development of our children. Although I do advise that parents/caregivers and educators should research different apps and features to find those that are most beneficial to their child’s needs.
