Why Work on Cutting Skills?
Developing cutting skills is an important milestone for our students. Not only does it prepare our students for more complex tasks later on, but it also offers a wide range of benefits. When our students work with scissor, they are working on improving their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and finger dexterity.
These skills are essential for everyday tasks like writing, drawing and more. Cutting with scissors can also help students to build their confidence and independence as they learn to master a new skill.

Why Cutting Santa’s Beard Works
This activity is simple: students cut along the lines of Santa’s beard. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity, it’s packed with learning opportunities. Cutting along straight, curved, or zigzag lines helps develop:
- Hand strength
- Bilateral coordination (using both hands together)
- Fine motor precision
- Visual motor integration (hand-eye coordination)
Scissor skills are essential for so many classroom tasks, from cutting and gluing to crafts, worksheets, and self-help skills like opening packets or wrapping presents. December is the perfect time to sneak in this type of practice while keeping things fun and seasonal.
Differentiation Ideas
One thing I love most about this Santa’s Beard activity is how easy it is to differentiate for your learners. You can tailor it for a wide range of abilities with just a few tweaks:
- Pre-cut the beard outline and let students just cut the lines
- Print on cardstock for extra resistance (great for building hand strength)
- Laminate and use dry erase markers to trace the lines before cutting
- Use adaptive scissors or loop scissors for students who need support
- Offer alternative tools like plastic knives or Play-Doh scissors for younger or developing learners
You can even challenge more advanced students to draw their own beard lines before cutting!
Classroom Setup Tips
Here are a few quick tips to make setup and cleanup a breeze:
- Use individual trays or folders for each student’s materials
- Provide a “cutting bin” for students to place scraps
- Play some calming Christmas music to create a cozy, focused atmosphere
- Pair the activity with a Santa-themed story for added literacy engagement
This is also a great center or morning work activity during the busy days leading up to winter break!
Cross-Curricular Extension Ideas
Looking to turn this into a full mini-lesson? Try these ideas:
- Math: Measure the beard strips before and after cutting
- Writing: Have students write a sentence about Santa or what he might say when his beard gets trimmed
- Speech & Language: Work on descriptive language – long, curly, short, jagged, etc.
- Sensory: Add texture to the beard (cotton balls, yarn, felt) to explore materials while cutting
